Astana - Hazrat Sultan Mosque

The Hazrat Sultan Mosque is now one of the most modern landmarks in Astana. It is the largest mosque in Central Asia, on which 1,500 construction workers worked for three years until it was opened in 2012. The building itself resembles an oriental palace and is the most beautiful architectural monument in the city of Astana.

The mosque has a dome with a height of 51 metres and a diameter of 28 metres. At the corners of the mosque are four 77-metre-high minarets, and around the main dome are eight smaller domes. The mosque is built in the classical oriental style. White was chosen as the main colour for the façade and the interiors. Massive white columns adorn the central hall of the mosque. They enhance the sense of monumentality of this beautiful creation. The interior and the façade are decorated with traditional Kazakh ornaments.

The mosque, with an area of 11 hectares, can accommodate ten thousand people at a time. There is a hall for weddings, a prayer room, a room for ablutions, a cloakroom and rooms for seminary classes and Quran reading.
