Osh - Mountain Pass Taldyk
The Taldyk Pass is a mountain pass that separates the Fergana Valley from the Chon-Alai Valley. The Mountain Pass Taldyk is located in the Osh region, 160 kilometres south of the city of Osh.
The Mountain Pass Taldyk is one of the most popular passes in the Osh region and Kyrgyzstan. Its serpentines can be seen in many travellers’ photo reports, and its altitude is 3,600 metres. The Taldyk Pass is the gateway to one of the highest and most beautiful roads in the world, the Pamir Road.
The northern slope of the pass is famous for its steep serpentine road that offers spectacular views of the Fergana Valley. The first road was built here in the late 19th century, and the event itself was a landmark in one of the most interesting colonial struggles between the Russian Empire and Britain for control of Central Asia, known as the Great Game.
A rare feature of Taldyk is that traffic is possible all year round, despite the high altitude. On the side of the pass road is a monument erected in honour of Yuri Frantsevich Grushko, an engineer who was involved in the planning and construction of the pass road.
